Penne with Italian Sausage Recipe

This Penne with Italian Sausage Recipe is a very basic, easy to make pasta dish. The recipe does not use a heavy tomato sauce and is primarily flavored by a good olive oil, basil and Parmesan cheese.

Ingredients:

1 pound penne pasta
1 teaspoon salt
1 pound Italian sausage, casing removed and coarsely crumbled
2 cups chopped onion
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
1/2 freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
2. Add pasta and cook to al dente.
3. Cook the sausage on the stove with medium-heat, until browned and cooked through (7-8 minutes.)
4. Add the onion and cook until golden brown (8-10 minutes).
5. Add the garlic, salt and pepper and cook for an additional 30-seconds.
6. In a large bowl add the drained pasta.
7. Dump the sausage onion mixture over the cooked pasta.
8. Add olive oil and basil and toss to mix.
9. Once it is well combined, finish with the Parmesan cheese.
